Order picker training is of critical importance in Ontario, as it is in any other region where warehouse operations are prevalent. An order picker, also known as a stock picker or cherry picker, is a type of forklift that is designed to lift workers to high elevations so that they can access and pick products from high shelves.
In Ontario, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and the associated regulations require that employers ensure that their employees receive proper training and instruction on the safe operation of an order picker. This is necessary to protect the safety of workers and to prevent accidents and injuries that can result from improper use of this equipment.
Some of the key reasons why order picker training is important in Ontario include:
Legal requirements: Employers have a legal obligation to provide their employees with training and instruction on the safe operation of an order picker. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in fines and other legal consequences.
Worker safety: Order picker training helps workers to understand the risks associated with operating this equipment and to take steps to minimize those risks. This can help to prevent accidents and injuries and to ensure that workers can safely perform their jobs.
Equipment maintenance: Order picker training can also include instruction on equipment maintenance, which can help to extend the life of the equipment and prevent breakdowns or malfunctions that can cause accidents or delays in operations.
Efficiency: Properly trained order picker operators can work more efficiently and effectively, which can help to improve productivity and reduce costs for employers.
Overall, order picker training is essential for the worksite safety, safety of workers and the success of warehouse operations in Ontario. Employers should ensure that all employees who operate order pickers receive proper training and instruction, and that this training is regularly updated to reflect changes in regulations or equipment.
