Lockout Tagout (LOTO) training is critical in Ontario because it helps prevent workplace accidents and injuries that can be caused by the unexpected release of stored energy during servicing or maintenance of machinery. LOTO is a safety procedure that involves isolating equipment from its energy source(s) and ensuring that it cannot be restarted or energized until the servicing or maintenance work is completed.
The Ontario Ministry of Labour requires employers to establish and implement a LOTO program that includes training for workers who perform maintenance or servicing on machinery, as well as those who operate the machinery. This training is essential to ensure that employees are aware of the risks associated with working with machinery and the importance of following proper safety procedures to prevent accidents.
Effective LOTO training should cover a range of topics, including identifying hazardous energy sources, understanding the types of energy control methods used to isolate machinery, and the steps required to properly lock out and tag out equipment. It should also include practical training exercises to help employees understand and apply the procedures correctly.
Failure to provide LOTO training can result in serious consequences for both employers and employees. Employers who fail to comply with LOTO requirements can face fines and legal action, while employees may suffer serious injuries or even fatalities from unexpected energy release incidents.
Overall, LOTO training is critical to protecting the safety and wellbeing of workers in Ontario, and it is essential for employers to ensure that their workers receive the necessary training to prevent accidents and injuries.

Lockout-tagout (LOTO) is a safety procedure which is used in industry and research settings to ensure that dangerous machines are properly shut off and not able to be started up again prior to the completion of maintenance or servicing work. “Lock out” is when a physical lock is attached and only an authorized employee has access to unlock it; “Tag out” is when a “do not operate” tag is placed on the disconnect. In our program, participants will learn the proper in-house procedures for LOTO as well as the methods outside contractors must abide to. Between management, supervisors and employees everybody has a role to play in performing a proper lock out.
Proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) practices and procedures safeguard workers from the release of hazardous energy. OHSA outlines specific action and procedures for addressing and controlling hazardous energy during servicing and maintenance of machines and equipment.
Employers are required to train each worker to ensure that they know, understand and are able to follow the applicable provisions of the hazardous energy control procedures. Workers must be trained in the purpose and function of the energy control program and have the knowledge and skills required for the safe application, usage and removal of the energy control devices.
All employees who work in an area where energy control procedures are utilized need to be instructed in the purpose and use of the energy control procedures, especially prohibition against attempting to restart or reenergize machines or other equipment that are locked or tagged out.
All employees who are authorized to lockout machines or equipment and perform the service and maintenance operations need to be properly trained in the recognition of applicable hazardous energy sources in the workplace, the type and magnitude of energy found in the workplace, and the means and methods of isolating and/or controlling the energy.
