What is an Annual Inspection for Fall Arrest Equipment?

An Annual Fall Arrest Equipment Inspection is a mandatory evaluation of personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to prevent falls. It includes:

Visual & Physical Inspection – Checking for damage, wear, and corrosion.
Functionality Testing – Ensuring equipment performs as intended.
Label & Certification Check – Confirming compliance with CSA, ANSI, and manufacturer standards. We provide a logbook
Documentation & Compliance Report – Providing a detailed report on equipment condition and recommendations for repairs or replacements.

Why is Annual Inspection Important?

Legal Compliance

Annual inspections are required under Ontario health and safety regulations and CSA Z259 standards. Non-compliance can lead to fines, liability issues, and work stoppages.

Worker Safety

Faulty equipment fails under stress, increasing the risk of severe injury or fatality in a fall. Regular inspections prevent accidents before they happen.

Cost Savings

Preventative maintenance reduces the need for expensive equipment replacements and lowers liability risks.

Legal & Legislative Requirements for Fall Arrest Equipment Inspections

Ontario Regulation 213/91 (Construction Projects) – Employers must ensure fall protection equipment is maintained and inspected at least annually by a Competent Person.

Ontario Regulation 851 (Industrial Establishments) – PPE, including fall protection, must be inspected regularly and before use.

CSA Z259 Standards – Full-body harnesses, lanyards, and self-retracting lifelines must be inspected by a Competent Person every 12 months.

Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) – Employers have a legal duty to ensure worker safety and provide properly maintained fall protection systems.

Who is a Competent Person for Fall Arrest Equipment Inspections?

A Competent Person, as defined by Ontario’s OHSA, is someone who:

✔ Has knowledge, training, and experience to inspect and assess fall protection equipment.
✔ Can identify hazards, defects, and safety concerns.
✔ Is authorized to take corrective measures when issues are found.
